The 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, landed at Le Havre on 15th August, 1914. On 17th August they went to Le Cateau by train and on 18th August marched to Landrecies and billets. It was here on this day that Arthur Walters was drowned while bathing in the canal.
